Middle Eight Music is an Australian record label, CD retailer and wholesale distributor based in Melbourne, Victoria. It was established in 1998 by singer/songwriter Shane Hewitt. The business began with just a handful of releases by local artists, but within a few years its catalogue grew to include a wide range of Australian and international show music, cabaret and jazz CDs. In April 2005, Max Peterson, a 30-year veteran of the music retail industry, became a partner in Middle Eight Music and in July of that year he and Shane proudly launched their new store in South Yarra. The shop quickly gained a reputation as the premier show music outlet in Australia. Max and Shane are very particular about providing friendly, personalised service, and if you're after an item that isn't in stock they'll gladly try to track it down for you.
About our name: We're often asked by customers where our name comes from, or "what does Middle Eight mean?" Put simply, the "middle eight" or "middle 8" is a term used by musicians for the eight bars of a song that are not the verse and not the chorus! Also known as the "bridge", the "middle eight" has a different melody and lyric from the verse or the chorus. For a detailed explanation check out a couple of Wikipedia entries here and here.
