Middle Eight Music, also known as Middle 8 Music, is an Australian online CD retailer and wholesale distributor based in Melbourne, Victoria. It was established in 1998 by singer/songwriter Shane Hewitt. The business began with just a handful of releases by local artists, but within a few years its catalogue grew to include a wide range of Australian and international show music, cabaret and jazz CDs. In April 2005, Max Peterson, a veteran of the music retail industry, became a partner in Middle Eight Music and in July of that year he and Shane opened a Middle Eight Music shop in South Yarra, which they ran for nearly five years. In April 2010, due to changes in the economic climate, they closed the shop and reverted to being an online mail-order business only. Middle Eight Music continues to be Australia's only CD retailer specialising in show music and cabaret, and if you're after an item that isn't in stock they'll gladly try to track it down for you.
About our name: We're often asked by customers where our name comes from, or "what does Middle Eight mean?" Put simply, the "middle eight" or "middle 8" is a term used by musicians for the eight bars of a song that are not the verse and not the chorus! Also known as the "bridge", the "middle eight" has a different melody and lyric from the verse or the chorus. For more detail check out this Wikipedia page.
