Product Description:
Martin Martini and the Bone Palace Orchestra have been taking Australia by stealth since they hit the music scene one year ago. Since their early live performances at some of Melbourne's most respected venues (The Old Bar, Manchester Lane, Wesley-Anne, Dante's, Dizzy's Jazz Bar, Bar Open, The Retreat Hotel), and a solid ongoing residency at Fitzroy's famous Rainbow Hotel, and live radio sets on PBS and 3RRR, The Bone Palace have snuck up on the music establishment like ASIO on a peace activist!
With a sound that fuses funk with junk, circus with jazz and everything from waltz, swing, blues and gypsy in-between, The Bone Palace create another world of sound to enter. Their infectious, old-world grooves and head-high tackle-lyrics have drawn crowds and fans in larger and larger numbers, hooked on the music and the unpredictable nature of their stage show. Late last year Martin Martini penned the empty pocket opera "Lucky Town" which sold out during Melbourne Fringe Festival and received a nomination for a Green Room Award for Best Original Lyrics in 2005. The dynamic nature of The Bone Palace Orchestra's music and musicality sees them attracting a solid rotating guest roster of Australia's finest musicians, performers and performance artists including Eddie Perfect. On any given night, it's not unlikely you'll see anything from poetry reading to a full-tilt, burlesque, hula-hoop act.
The Bone Palace has featured in The Famous Spiegeltent at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2006, the HiFi Ballroom as the resident house band during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2006 and The Studio at The Sydney Opera House.
The six-piece band is Peter Burgess (tuba), James Macaulay (trombone), Ben Hendry (drums/percussion), Sam Dunscombe (clarinet), Xani Kolac (violin) and Martin Martini the wailing and moaning front-man and master of ceremonies on keyboard.
The CD comes in a presentation slipcase with a lavish full colour 12 page booklet which includes the complete lyrics.
"Fat Vaudevillian rock'n'roll - it will be interesting to see what another 10 years of hard living will do to Martin Martini's nascent freak-show grotesquerie of art, words and music. Often compared to Britain's Tigerlillies and Australia's Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, there are indeed common threads. Throw in a dash of Brecht and Weill, Talking Heads and dirty gypsy lift music, and you get a fair idea of what this junk circus is all about. Fresh from recording his new album, Martini corralled two choirs, one made up of kids, for the macabre Clowns Will Eat Me, and the other, a 45-strong drunk man's chorus (literally), for another called Poor John, about a cook who goes mad. Menacingly attractive, there is something of the wild-eyed malevolent pied-piper about Martini and his crew of misfits and ne'er-do-wells. Expect to be seduced and appalled in equal measure." Lily Bragge, The Age Arts Review 2006
"One gets the feeling if Martin Martini had his way every Bone Palace Orchestra gig would be played under a circus tent to an audience of sideshow freaks, carnies and itinerants." Dee Sharp
