"UP was first workshopped in 2001 at the West Australian Academy Of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with the first year students. I was in my third year. UP represented my first ever foray into writing a piece and in many ways it was an experiment. I wanted to know if I could write and if I could hold an audience and a cast's attention and imagination with my own writing. I hadn't touched UP since graduating and it was only at the request of Martin Croft that I took it off the shelf to have another look. What I found when I revisited the music was how incredibly free from cynicism I was at the time I wrote it. It's like a photograph of a much more idealistic and optimistic writer. I should point out that I'm only twenty-eight. Christ knows how much darker my outlook is going to get! UP wouldn't have worked this time 'round if it were not for the idealism and optimism of the (2nd Year) VCA music theatre students. Their unique acceptance and willingness to take on the material and infuse it with their own experiences of risk, change and infinite possibility actually made me let go of my anxiety of my former self. I could never write something like that again.
I am eternally grateful to Martin Croft, the VCA music theatre students and the incredible production team for putting such passion and faith in this strange little piece. I've written a lot of seemingly jaded and cynical stuff since UP, but I'm as proud of this collection of songs as any I've written since. More so. Thanks to all at the VCA for digging up the past and making it part of the present."
